Gadolinium: How It Can Affect Your Body’s Cells and Organs

Gadolinium is a contrast agent used in medical imaging to enhance the visibility of certain tissues and organs. However, recent studies have raised concerns about its potential risks to the body. In this blog, we’ll look closer at how gadolinium can affect your body’s cells and organs, and what you can do to stay informed and protected. Gadolinium is a chemical element with the symbol Gd and atomic number 64. Gadolinium can exist in several oxidation states, including Gd(0), Gd(II), and Gd(III). Gd(III) is the most common and stable oxidation state, which means it has a positive charge of +3. The positive charge of Gd(III) allows it to interact with negatively charged ligands and biomolecules, making it an effective contrast agent for MRI. This will come into play when we talk about solutions. 

How Gadolinium Affects Cells

Gadolinium is a metal ion that gains entry into cells through binding sites and cell receptors, as well as passive diffusion. Once inside cells, gadolinium can prevent calcium from entering by binding to calcium channels, disrupting cellular processes that rely on calcium. This can lead to muscle contractions, enzyme activation, and cellular signaling being disrupted. Studies have also shown that gadolinium can impact the mitochondria, which are the energy-producing organelles in cells, leading to a decrease in ATP production and energy levels.
